MPs have dismissed the South African Social Security Agency’s (Sassa’s) reservations about the capacity of the South African Post Office to take over the payment of social grants as a barely concealed attempt to let Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) "re-emerge from the shadows". Acting CEO Pearl Bhengu faced MPs of the standing committee on public accounts alone on Tuesday after Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini failed to attend a status update meeting, citing government business. Bhengu, whose appointment in July raised eyebrows because of her close ties to Dlamini, angered MPs by questioning the Post Office’s capacity to take over the distribution of grants. Sassa expected to conclude evaluating submissions made in response to its request for proposals and to award a tender to the Post Office by end-August.
