ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu said on Tuesday the party’s caucus in Parliament had unanimously agreed to defeat the motion of no confidence against President Jacob Zuma. Speaking to Business Day minutes before stepping into the National Assembly for the start of the debate preceding the vote, he maintained the caucus was not pressured to vote in any particular manner, but that it agreed it could not vote with the opposition. Mthembu said the caucus meeting was "more confident" that the party would defeat the motion. "We agreed this morning that we will go to chambers today and vote against this motion. We have no fear. We are very comfortable and we maintain that voting with the opposition does not cl necessarily mean voting in the nation's interest," said Mthembu.
