The former senior Trillian employee, who made disclosures about the company to former public protector Thuli Madonsela, has pulled out of the Democracy Works Foundation’s democracy defenders dialogue at the last minute, because of security concerns and ongoing litigation. This was disclosed during the start of the dialogue late on Monday afternoon at the University of the Witwatersrand’s (Wits’s) school of governance. The dialogue was being hosted by the Democracy Works Foundation in collaboration with the Wits school of governance, Business Leadership SA and the Platform for the Protection of Whistleblowers in Africa. Madonsela, Prof William Gumede, adv William Bourdon — Edward Snowden’s lawyer — and Thandiwe Matthews were due to have a panel discussion about democracy defenders. ANC MP Pravin Gordhan was to deliver the closing address at the event.
