The ANC’s implosion, spurred by the jostling for power and succession, the collapse of institutions and rising inequality had plunged South Africa’s democracy into an undeniable crisis, speakers at the democracy defenders dialogue said late on Monday. This had led to an unprecedented paralysis among the electorate, who were bystanders watching the state’s multiple failures and were witnessing a sweeping tide of corruption. This had created fertile ground for ordinary citizens to become whistleblowers, who needed imaginative ways in which they had to be protected, especially in South Africa and the rest of the continent, where the environment tended to be hostile to whistleblowing.
