Public Service and Administration Minister Faith Muthambi will have to answer to Parliament regarding allegations that she spent R300,000 of her department’s money on her friends and family. The Sunday Times reported at the weekend that the department had paid for 30 members of the minister’s entourage to attend her budget vote speech in Parliament in May. The chairwoman of the portfolio committee for public service and administration, monitoring and evaluation, Makhosi Khoza, said the committee would write to Muthambi to request her to appear before the committee. If she did not honour the invitation, the committee would summons her. Khoza said it would seek to establish the rationale behind the spending spree in the face of the government’s commitment to cut costs. "We are alarmed just as much as the public was alarmed and that is why we need an explanation from her…. We expect our ministers to understand that we are really going through a difficult financial time as a government....
