Police watchdog Ipid and intelligence head vow to work together to fight corruption
The inspector-general of intelligence and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) will join forces to "fight corruption within police ranks". Ipid executive director Robert McBride and intelligence inspector-general Setlhomamaru Dintwe signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday, the two institutions said in a joint statement. The aim of the MOU is to regulate the relationship between the two institutions, especially with regards to joint investigations. Their mandates cross where investigations involve crime intelligence in the police. The crime intelligence unit in the police has been in disarray for years, and has had no permanent head since Lt-Gen Richard Mdluli was suspended several years ago. City Press reported in June that the new acting head of crime intelligence, Maj-Gen Pat Mokushane, has a criminal record.
