The late Nelson Mandela’s former wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, has distanced herself from the controversial book detailing his last years. In a statement released on Wednesday, she said she was "disturbed" by reports that she gave permission for the now de-commissioned book, Mandela’s Last Years, authored by Mandela’s former doctor, Vejay Ramlakan. Ramlakan has said on various media platforms that he was granted permission by the Mandela family to write the book, without mentioning the names of those in the family who gave him the green light to reveal the details of the late statesman’s twilight years. The publishing company behind the book, Penguin Random House, announced this week that it would stop any further distribution of the book following threats of legal action by Mandela’s widow, Graça Machel.
