The small West Rand municipality of Mogale City has finally passed its budget, ending months of turmoil and averting being placed under administration. In a surprise move, the EFF supported the budget tabled on Tuesday by the ANC mayor, Patrick Lipudi. The ANC won back the mayoral seat after the removal of DA mayor Michael Holenstein by secret ballot in a vote of no confidence. The EFF served as voting partner with the coalition government — made up of the DA, the Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) and the IFP — and had boycotted the two former council meetings, along with its official coalition partners. The voting block was — at least on the surface — united until Tuesday’s meeting. The DA had left the meeting, while the FF Plus, the IFP and the EFF stayed in council. Without the opposition councilors attending, it was impossible for the ANC to get a quorum.
