President Jacob Zuma has appointed five new full-time commissioners to the South African Human Rights Commission. The commissioners start their seven-year term on January 3, the Presidency said on Friday. Prof Bongani Christopher Majola — who lost out on the public protector job to Busisiwe Mkhwebane — is the new chairman and Devikarani Priscilla Sewpal Jana is his deputy. Other full-time commissioners appointed are advocate Andrew Hurtley Gaum; Matlhodi Angelina Makwetla, who is a trustee of the National Empowerment Fund; and advocate Joseph Bokankatla Malatji.  Andrew Christoffel Nissen and Jonas Sibanyoni were appointed part-time commissioners.  “President Zuma wishes the new commissioners all the best in their new important responsibility of entrenching constitutional democracy through advocating and protecting the basic human rights of all South Africans,” the Presidency said.  Zuma also wished the outgoing commissioners the best in their future endeavours.
