The DA wants President Jacob Zuma to place State Security Minister David Mahlobo on special leave pending an investigation into his relationship with a reported illegal rhino horn trafficker. Al Jazeera reported in a documentary‚ The Poachers Pipeline‚ that a rhino horn trafficker had bragged about his close connections to Mahlobo‚ who runs the country’s intelligence services. Mahlobo has threatened to sue for defamation over the allegation that he has links to Chinese trafficker Guan Jiang Guang. DA chief whip John Steenhuisen said Mahlobo could not continue in his current position with the allegation hanging over his head. "It is grossly inappropriate that someone privy to information on and tasked with combating organised crime finds himself associating with suspected members of Chinese organised crime syndicates," he said.
