Embattled President Jacob Zuma received another blow on Wednesday with the news that he will face a judicial inquiry into his relationship with the politically connected Gupta family. The week is Zuma’s worst since taking office, with several reversals in the courts; a growing number of calls for him to step down from all quarters and the release of a damning report on state capture by former public protector Thuli Madonsela. Madonsela observes that Zuma may have violated the Executive Ethics Code, infringed the provisions of the Prevention of Corrupt Activities Act and failed to comply with section 195 of the Constitution — and there may be a possible conflict of interest due to the relationship between his son and his friends, the Gupta family. Her remedial action — which will take forward the investigation — is a judicial commission of inquiry to be established within 30 days to be headed by a judge selected by Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng.
