Lobby groups challenging the prosecution of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan in court have added new evidence to their case, which they say shows the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) did not properly investigate before charging Gordhan. Freedom Under Law and the Helen Suzman Foundation, which want the High Court in Pretoria to set aside the charges and grant a permanent stay of prosecution, said on Wednesday that the charges were hopeless and without any basis in law and fact. They said new information had come to light: the NPA had subpoenaed Krishen Sukdev, the CEO of the Government Pensions Administration Agency, to appear before a magistrate and be questioned. But the NPA said the subpoena was the result of representations made to prosecutions head Shaun Abrahams by former South African Revenue Service commissioner Oupa Magashula and former acting commissioner Ivan Pillay.
