DURBAN has become the latest theatre where the battle against colonial- and apartheid-era statues plays out.Statues of two prominent figures of SA’s colonial past — Louis Botha and Dick King — have become the latest targets of the campaign. Although pictures of the defaced statues, which have been covered in white, are already circulating online, the police in KwaZulu-Natal were bewildered when BDlive asked them to confirm the incident.A spokesman at the police’s media centre said: "Send us an e-mail, we have not heard anything about that."Several other statues were vandalised across the country last week.At the weekend a statue of lawyer and freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi was vandalised in the Johannesburg CBD.That incident followed the defacing of a statue of British imperialist Cecil John Rhodes at the University of Cape Town.
