DEPUTY President Cyril Ramaphosa has been appointed chairman of the National Planning Commission by President Jacob Zuma, the first indication of his role in the new administration.The deputy president’s duties are assigned by the president, and there has been much speculation whether Mr Ramaphosa will be given a substantive role.The commission met last week for the first time since the start of Mr Zuma’s second term.The commission’s previous chairman was Trevor Manuel, who did not stand for election to Parliament last month. Mr Ramaphosa served under him as deputy chairman. Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe, who many assumed would be chairman due to his Cabinet portfolio, was appointed deputy chairman. Commissioners were told Mr Zuma would ask Mr Manuel to return as an ordinary commissioner.The commissioners — 25 in total — are part-time and are appointed by the president for a five-year period.
