The JSE opened firmer on Tuesday amid the release of mixed company results. Resources gained on firmer commodity prices and Naspers rose on an upbeat performance in Hong Kong trade from its Chinese Tencent investment, of which it owns about a third. Tencent rose 0.55% in early-morning trade with the overall Hang Seng 1.14% higher. The Nikkei 225 shed 0.05%. BHP led the global miners higher after it reported strong annual results with headline earnings per share rising to 107c for the year to end-June from a negative 16.3c in the previously comparable year. Retailers gained for the second consecutive session ahead of expected positive consumer inflation data due on Wednesday. The Dow closed 0.13% up to 21,703.75 on Monday as US markets swung between gains and losses throughout the day before closing with modest gains.
