The "Trump slump" resumed on Thursday, with most of the stock exchanges trading ahead of the JSE’s opening losing ground. US and European stock exchanges closed lower on Wednesday, partly due to reports that president-elect Donald Trump had selected Wilbur Ross as his commerce secretary. Ross is known as a mercantilist opposed to open markets. A meeting Trump requested on Thursday with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe led to reports that "Team Trump" is completely shambolic. Japanese officials said they could not get answers on where or when Trump wanted to meet in New York or what he wanted to talk about. Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 index, which initially lost 5.35% on November 9 when Trump’s victory in the US election was announced but then rebounded, was down 0.2% on Thursday morning.
