It has been quite an eventful year for car launches, with the majority of new models proving good advocates of their respective segments — some more so than others. However, before we all go on a well-deserved break, here are the cars that truly impressed me this year and that I would gladly park in my Christmas garage. Now the Volkswagen Golf VII GTI remains the perennial hot hatch, the benchmark in its segment, and the one many a rival would like to emulate. Two years ago, the Golf VII R took the laurels as my favourite hot hatch of that year, a vehicle for all seasons really, thanks to its four-wheel drive system and turbocharged four-pot engine. It also had the company’s slick-shifting DSG gearbox, although you could also get it with a manual box.
