THE Sasol South African Solar Challenge is the test bed for university engineering faculties around the country to showcase their engineering skills, by building a solar-powered vehicle. Each of these will compete against other universities in a 2,000km endurance challenge taking place from 27 September to 4 October.According to Prof Willem Clarke, CEO of Resolution Circle, a technology research and development subsidiary of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the company behind the Ilanga II ("the sun" in isiZulu) solar car project, a chance is given to undergraduate students to apply practically what they have learnt during their mechanical engineering course.He says around 60 students are employed by Resolution Circle and this, in essence, gives them the relevant in-service training required by UJ in order to graduate.
