FOR anyone with petrol in their veins, attending the legendary BMW Group sponsored Concours d’Elegance at the Villa d’Este on the side of Lake Como, Italy, is the same as an art lover entering the doors of the Louvre in Paris. For me it was a real bucket list item, a chance to see some of the most iconic and, in many cases, most beautiful cars ever made.Walking down the steps of the villa the first cars were Jaguars, including a D-Type and the XK120 that Norman Dewis drove to a world land speed record for a production car in 1953. Parked alongside them were a number of Italians including the Maserati 450S of 1956 and then Ferraris that would have any fan of the Maranello marque salivating. First up was the real redhead, the 500 TRC (Testa Rossa) of 1957 followed by one of the most famous Fezzas ever made, a 1963 250 GTO, this one with coachwork by Berlinetta and Scaglietti.
