John Lurie has been many things over the course of his 68 years. He was the co-founder with his brother Evan of the seminal avant garde jazz band The Lounge Lizards, darlings of the downtown New York scene of the late ’70s and ’80s. In his friend Jim Jarmusch’s breakout films Stranger than Paradise and Down by Law he was the effortlessly deadpan star. As creator and star of the cult favourite ’90s cable TV show Fishing with John he travelled to exotic locations in the company of ubercool companions such as Tom Waits, Willem Dafoe and Dennis Hopper. Now he is a reclusive hermit painter who has enjoyed some success and critical appreciation for the surreally playful works he creates from his worktable on an undisclosed Caribbean islet he’s called home for most of the past decade...
