Making theatre is a fool’s game. Or, more accurately, trying to make money from making theatre is a fool’s game.
Sure, there are the Broadway and West End hits that, after a few sold-out runs, become a licence to print money. (A handful of SA producers have managed this on a smaller scale.) And, as some famous names do, if you can fit theatre work into a more lucrative career in film and TV, you’re all set. (Very few local performers have found their way into this Big Time — and then theatre is barely in the mix.)..
