AN EGYPTIAN photographic artist last night walked away with the main 2016 Barclays L’Atelier contemporary art prize.The Barclays L’Atelier awards, which have been described as pivotal in many artistic careers, was opened up to artists from African countries other than SA for the first time in 2015. The competition is open to artists under 35 and is run in partnership with the South African National Association for the Visual Arts.The competition is open to artists from SA, Zambia, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Egypt, Mauritius, the Seychelles and Tanzania.Nourhan Refaat won the R225,000 top prize, which comes with a six-month residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.South African Matete Motubatse won the runner-up Gerard Sekoto Award and a three-month residency at the same Paris organisation.Barclays Art and Museum curator Paul Bayliss said the competition had revealed "not only great diversity in aesthetic, but also dominant narratives from particular regions"."The ...
