MARIKANA — The Musical stole the show at Tuesday night’s Naledi Theatre Awards, winning six awards.Aubrey Sekhabi’s production won Best Set Design, Best Score/Arrangement/Adaptation, Best Original Choreography, Best Director, Best Performance in a Musical: Female and Best Production of a Musical. The production received 12 nominations.The ceremony was held at the Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City, and hosted by poet, actress and TV presenter Lebo Mashile and "SA’s top puppet political analyst" Chester Missing. Guest presenters included Isidingo actors Kgomotso Christopher and Jack Devnarain, Marikana — The Musical star Aubrey Poo and director Sylvaine Strike.Theatre veteran Paul Slabolepszy’s Pale Native received three awards: Best Production of a Play, Best Supporting Actor and Best Performance in a play.Athol Fugard’s The Shadow of a Hummingbird won the award for the Best New South African Script.The Fugard Theatre garnered five awards.
