THE Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Jazz 2013 has been awarded to a bass player: the multitalented Shane Cooper.This is good news, because Cooper has a long-time interest in original music, and in genre combinations that stretch the definition of "jazz" beyond what National Arts Festival audiences might predict.Cooper, like many of our most interesting jazz players and composers (for example, Marcus Wyatt and Feya Faku), is originally from the Eastern Cape, although since graduating from the University of Cape Town in 2008 with a degree in jazz performance, his base has been Cape Town. His past and current playing partners include Wyatt and Louis Moholo-Moholo, as well as Kesivan Naidoo in the South Asian-influenced Babu.
