The 750,000km network requires a sound asset management programme, planning and proactive maintenance
SA’s extensive road network, the 11th-longest in the world, is an impressive expression of our engineering ingenuity and skill. Of this 750,000km road network, the SA National Roads Agency (Sanral) manages about 24,500km (84% non-tolled and 16% tolled). The provinces manage about 270,897km, with 44,536km paved, while municipalities and metros manage 323,023km, of which 89,339km is paved.
Tourists (local and foreign) are always astounded by it, but this network is also vital to the health of our economy. Managing such an extensive network under constrained resources emphasises the need for a sound asset management programme, efficient planning for capital works and proactive maintenance. ..
