Tractor sales leapt 24.9% year on year in November, to 566 units, according to the South African Agricultural Machinery Association (Saama). In 2016 sales fell 11.3% to 5,855 units, when drought conditions prevailed in the summer rainfall area."After the promising beginning to the summer-cropping season, some areas did not have follow-up rain. Since then, however, there has been widespread rain in most of these areas. Planting of summer crops has therefore been delayed in many areas. Nevertheless, farmers are optimistic for the forthcoming summer rainfall season," the industry body said."It remains a buyers’ market, with lower-priced stock available in some instances. The exchange rate is being watched carefully because of its effect on crop prices and prices of imported equipment."Industry expectations for 2017 are that overall tractor sales should be at least 5% more than in 2016. In the first 11 months of 2017, tractor sales were up 8.0% year on year.
