SA has fallen down the rankings in a global survey of talent, as its education continues to fail to produce quality outcomes and the country loses its attractiveness for foreign talent. The latest World Talent Ranking by Swiss business school IMD shows SA declining from 43rd to 48th, out of 63 countries. This is despite the fact SA’s public spending on education puts it fourth highest in the rankings, and it ranks near the top of the index for its favourable cost of living and tax regimes, which should make it attractive to foreign and local highly skilled personnel. However, the survey finds that SA is near the bottom of the table when it comes to indicators such as school pupil-teacher ratios, and that it ranks 61st out of the 63 countries on its implementation of apprenticeship programmes, all of which reflect the poor level of the resources committed to cultivating homegrown talent.
