Transnet CE Siyabonga Gama says the fact that the company spent R15bn on broad-based black economic empowerment (BBBEE) procurement shows that it is serious about black owned businesses. Speaking at the Enterprise and Supplier Development Conference in Midrand on Thursday, Gama said in the six month financial period ending on September 30 2016, Transnet’s BBBEE spend was R15.8bn. "So, as you can see, we are putting our money where our mouth is," said Gama. He said Transnet was using its capital operations expenditure to develop the business skills of black people for the next 10 years. Gama added that the rail company also provides financial and nonfinancial support to black owned businesses. Transnet’s plans for small businesses are in line with the National Development Plan which seeks to create 11-million jobs by 2030, with support for small businesses being one of the main solutions to reaching that goal.
