CONGESTION on Johannesburg’s M1 highway caused by road maintenance work is likely to force motorists to seek transport alternatives that they may stick to when the repairs are completed, transport analysts say.There is, however, concern that the City of Johannesburg is not doing enough to encourage motorists to use public transport to avoid traffic jams.The maintenance work, which was ramped up this week, has frustrated road users. The M1 is a key arterial route and carries more than 80,000 private cars daily, along with commercial traffic and public transport vehicles such as minibus taxis and buses.The city began its R200m programme to rehabilitate three bridges on the M1, among other work, in April.The maintenance is expected to be completed in May 2017, according to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).The project is part of a R110bn plan announced in 2013 to upgrade road infrastructure in the city over 10 years.Transport economist Andrew Marsay said the congestion experienced on...
