Wholesale trade up, driven by dealers in agricultural raw materials and livestock
WHOLESALE trade increased 5% year on year in May following growth of 5.9% in April, data from Statistics SA showed on Thursday.Seasonally adjusted wholesale trade sales increased 2.6% in May 2016 compared with April 2016. This followed a 1.6% contraction in April, after a rise of 1.2% in March.In the three months ended May 2016, seasonally adjusted wholesale trade sales increased 2.5% compared with the previous three months.Measured in nominal terms (current prices), wholesale trade sales increased 11.7% in May 2016 compared with May 2015. The main contributors to this increase were dealers in agricultural raw materials and livestock (61.4% and contributing 4.2 percentage points); and machinery, equipment and supplies (24.5% and contributing 3.9 percentage points).Wholesale trade sales increased 9.8% in the three months ended May 2016 compared with the three months ended May 2015.
