Vodacom is charging customers up to R49 to roll over their unused data
SA’s new data-expiry regulations come into effect on February 28
With SA’s new data-expiry regulations set to come into effect on Thursday, it has emerged that Vodacom is charging customers to roll over their unused data when it expires. The rules, set by the Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa), state that mobile operators must send notifications to consumers about data-bundle usage and must let customers roll over unused data. The regulations will come into effect from February 28. Vodacom, according to its website, is charging customers for the “data bundle roll-over service”. To roll over a data bundle of more than 1GB, and with a validity period of more than one day, for example, Vodacom will charge as much as R49.
A spokesperson for MTN said the network operator did not charge its customers for such a service. Spokespeople for Vodacom, Cell C and Telkom did not immediately respond to Business Day’s queries.
