Naspers-owned video-on-demand provider ShowMax has partnered with Vodacom to launch a video-on-demand service exclusively to the network operator’s customers.

The service, called ShowMax Select, will cost R49 per month and is optimised for lower data consumption on smartphones and tablets.

It is billed directly to a Vodacom account.

Head of ShowMax Africa Chris Savides said: "We designed Select to be viewed first and foremost on mobile devices, with multiple options for managing data consumption," he said.

As the cost of smartphones and tablets continues to fall, more and more South Africans are getting connected and can access internet TV services.

A major barrier, however, is the fact that many services require payment via credit card. This excludes the majority of the population who do not have a credit card, said Savides.

"Internet TV services should be accessible to everyone, not just the lucky few who have credit cards. By partnering with Vodacom, we’ve made it simple to charge both ShowMax Select and ShowMax Premium directly to your Vodacom account, no credit card needed."
