MINING companies are working on weaning themselves off Rand Water by bolstering their recycling projects, as municipalities tighten the taps in and around Johannesburg and the general Gauteng area because of low reserves.The effects of prolonged drought conditions are starting to become apparent in Gauteng, with several municipalities including Ekurhuleni, introducing tough new measures to curb excessive use after receiving notice from the Department of Water and Sanitation that they had to reduce use by 15%, especially from the integrated Vaal River system.Chamber of Mines spokeswoman Charmane Russell said that mines situated in the eastern limb of Gauteng were usually the worst affected, but mining companies had been building pipelines to access water and had put in place recycling systems to mitigate against disruptions and to reduce their dependency on Rand Water, Gauteng’s water utility.AngloGold Ashanti spokesman Chris Nthite on Monday said the company would not be affected by...
