The 2017 financial year was an unusually difficult period for Netcare as tough market conditions in both SA and the UK put the private hospital operator under pressure, says CEO Richard Friedland.

The company has reported negative patient day growth for much of the year in its home territory. While overall caseload volumes in the UK grew, in-patient cases, which generate higher revenue, fell.

Netcare was also hit by a strong rand, with group revenue for the full year pulling back 9.6% as a result of the currency conversion.

Friedland talks to Business Day TV about how the company plans to navigate these tough economic conditions.
