London-based Standard Chartered has appointed Kweku Bedu-Addo to head its South African and Southern African arm, as incumbent Richard Etemesi moves to serve on the bank’s board as vice chairperson for Africa. Bedu-Addo began his career at Ghana’s finance ministry in 1990, moving to the World Bank six years later. In 1998, he turned to the private sector, signing on as a financial analyst at Ghana’s General Leasing & Finance Company. His appointment is part of a reshuffle of its South African senior management less than four years after a previous reshuffle, as Ebenezer Essoka — the bank’s vice chairman responsible for the African region — retires. Essoka was appointed as vice-chairman for the African region in January 2014, travelling between Johannesburg, London, and StanChart’s branches in Africa, whose South African arm looks after around R33.9bn in assets, according to Reserve Bank filings.
