The Eskom board said on Thursday it would undertake a forensic and legal investigation into the allegations of conflict of interest against its acting CE, Matshela Koko. This follows damning revelations that his stepdaughter had benefited from more than R1.8bn in contracts with the utility. As the announcement came, however, more suspicious dealings and allegations of wrongdoing at Eskom emerged. This week, under Koko’s stewardship, Eskom has approved a multibillion-rand deal that could expose it to accusations of wrongdoing. It awarded a R4bn contract to China’s Dongfang Electric Company for the procurement and fitment of a boiler at the Duvha power station. Eskom’s own documents say Dongfang’s tender was at least 25% more expensive than those of two other competitors. General Electric and Murray & Roberts tendered for R3bn and R3.3bn respectively. It is likely the losing bidders will challenge the outcome in court.
