Facial recognition software will help protect Uber drivers and passengers
App-driven cab service Uber is introducing new safety features in SA, including a project to use facial recognition technology to intermittently verify drivers’ identities. Drivers will have to take a picture of themselves to allow comparison with their profile pictures on file with Uber. Should the two images not match, the account will be suspended. As well as protecting passengers, the measure also aims to also protect the driver from fraud, theft or compromising of their account. The phased roll-out in SA began on Wednesday, to ensure it was simple and intuitive, Uber SA said on Wednesday, but it had already been tested in a variety of different operating environments.
