SA consumers are spoiled for choice with Amazon’s launch on Wednesday of its video-on-demand (VOD) service, Amazon Prime Video. Increased internet availability in SA has widened access to entertainment and media products and services and created new opportunities for companies. Local and international VOD services launched in SA in recent years include Netflix, Naspers-owned Showmax and Discover Digital. Amazon Prime Video charges $2.99 for shows such as The Grand Tour from Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, The Man in the High Castle, Transparent, Mozart in the Jungle, Tumble Leaf and other Hollywood content. The monthly subscription is less than those for existing video on demand services including Showmax and Netflix.
