According to the 2015 Metrofile Information and Records Management index, South African businesses noted a marked increase in incidents of corporate identity theft. Gemalto’s Breach Level Index Report for the first half of 2016 corresponds with it. This is in line with global trends — identity theft accounted for 64% of all data breaches globally, up from 53% in the previous six months. Increasingly, we are seeing cybercrimes, such as data theft, fraud or extortion, being perpetrated by rogue employees or third-party service providers. In their 2015 cyber claims study, NetDiligence found there was insider involvement in 32% of cyber insurance claims. SA is no different, with numerous such cases being reported. The system and data access granted to employees and providers passes through many perimeter security controls and leaves companies exposed to actions by these people.
