Mr Sipunzi obtained 354 votes to Mr Baleni’s 345 votes ending the incumbent’s near decade long leadership.Acting president Piet Matosa was confirmed as the union president and North East secretary William Mabapa was elected to replace deputy general secretary Tshimane Montoedi.This means that Mr Sipunzi — who, according to Mr Matosa had never led wage talks with the Chamber of Mines — will lead the upcoming round of wage negotiations in gold and coal.
