Mark Alexander is officially the new head of South African Rugby (Saru), which he has been leading as acting president. Alexander‚ who became deputy president of Saru in 2007‚ was elected unopposed in Johannesburg on Thursday to succeed Oregan Hoskins, who resigned in August. Alexander has been Saru’s acting president since then. He will head rugby’s governing body until the next elections in 2018. Francois Davids‚ a member of the executive council‚ will step into Alexander’s former role as deputy president‚ while Valke Rugby Union president Vivian Lottering will fill the vacancy left open by Davids on the executive council. Alexander conceded that South African rugby had been going through a period of turmoil and he was looking forward to taking it to greater heights.
