Anglo Platinum could be next to face strike action

More strikes are on the horizon, this time in the platinum sector, as the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said on Thursday it had rejected an offer of a 4.6% wage increase from world number one platinum producer Anglo Platinum.

The trade union is seeking a 14% increase in pay from the mining industry.

"NUM took a decision not to continue with talks with the company tomorrow and to proceed with consultation with members to ask for a mandate for strike action," the trade union said.

It added that it was "highly disappointed" by the company's offer.

SA's gold industry is already facing a strike after negotiations faltered earlier this week.

The coal sector could also be hit, with three trade unions on Thursday declaring a dispute with coal mining companies over wages.
