IF THE second round of Super rugby fixtures didn't get South African followers excited — five of the six local franchises won over the weekend — nothing will. In fairness, none of our teams' defences was amazing — a combined tally of 21 tries were conceded by our sides — but you need to score points to win rugby matches. Defence and the territory game are traditionally areas South African teams have managed well in the past and it was attack with which we struggled. However, the quality of our rugby in general has been much better and the attacking impetus has been aided by the coaching continuity throughout the country.The work that began last year to improve player skills in order to implement a ball-in-hand approach continued pre-season and, for the first time, we have turned the corner.
