ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe’s future in the party’s leadership looks uncertain. What does seem clear, though, is that he won’t stay on in his current position, which he has held for nearly 10 years. "It’s too strenuous, it will kill me," he told News24  in an interview. The possibility of another top-six job for him is unclear. He ruled out a demotion to deputy secretary-general as too junior, and said treasurer-general was not for him as fundraising was a weak point. And, as he had not been nominated for either chairman or deputy president, eyeing those would be "presumptuous", he said. The ANC’s next elective conference is scheduled for December 2017, though there have been calls to bring it forward. The party is also resisting pressure for the resignation of the NEC.
