I refer to the opinion piece published in your paper on October 20 2016, written by Matshela Koko. I am grateful that Mr Koko has been given a platform to express his views which, I presume, reflect the views of Eskom, his employer. That article makes a number of misleading inferences and statements, which I suspect are intended to direct public opinion away from procuring power from independent power producers (the so-called IPPs), particularly the renewable energy (wind, solar and hydro) IPPs and towards Eskom generation, particularly nuclear. • Let’s start with the first misleading inference: that a group of people that believe renewable energy should be procured at any cost are driving renewable energy procurement in SA. That is totally untrue. What is true is that for various reasons there has been a public policy decision that the introduction of clean energy into the mix of energy produced is a good thing and that it might be necessary to pay a premium to achieve that outcome...
