Marathon talks to end the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union’s (Nehawu’s) 10-week-long strike at the University of Zululand (Unizulu) have so far failed as the union was on Monday prevented from entering the campus. Hundreds of Nehawu members at Unizulu embarked on a strike on August 15‚ demanding wage increases, the conversion of temporary staff to permanent employees and eight other demands. Recently the university was granted a court interdict by the High Court in Durban, preventing Nehawu members from entering the university premises to stage pickets. Two weeks ago striking University of Zululand workers tried to force their way into the high-security venue at Durban’s International Convention Centre while President Jacob Zuma was addressing 1,500 local and international delegates attending the 17th World Federation of Trade Unions Congress.
