The Ministry of Police has forked out R16.6m in legal cases against Robert McBride, and Hawks officials Shadrack Sibiya, Anwar Dramat and Johan Booysen. Police Minister Nathi Nhleko said court action against the department by McBride, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) executive director, cost the department more than R6.7m. The suspension of Sibiya, the former Gauteng provincial Hawks head, cost the department R6.3m, while the court challenge by Johan Booysen, KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head, against his suspension had cost the department more than R2.8m. In a written reply to questions from DA MP and police committee member Zakhele Mbhele, Nhleko said the costs in the McBride case had to do with motions pertaining to his suspension and review proceedings.
