The University of Cape Town has jumped up 50 places in the third annual Best Global Universities rankings. UCT, along with other African institutions, probably benefited from a shift in focus in the rankings from academic qualifications to academic output, the university said. Two new indicators were introduced — number and percentage of papers in the top 1% of papers cited — replacing two indicators of the number of PhDs awarded, criteria that had disadvantaged African institutions. UCT was the top-ranked university in Africa in the global rankings, at 112, and seven of Africa’s top 10 were South African. Egypt had two in the top 10 and Uganda one. The University of Witwatersrand was ranked second in Africa, followed by the University of KwaZulu-Natal and Stellenbosch University.
