Hylton Hale is the skipper and owner of Vulcan, SA’s entrant to the Cape 2 Rio yacht race, which starts on January 1. The Financial Mail asked him: Does the sailing industry contribute much to the economy? Yes it is substantial, especially in the Western Cape, where the largest catamaran builder, Robertson & Caine, is based at Paarden Eiland. It launches about five boats a week, each valued at anything between R6m and R12m. Another large contributor is the Southern Wind Shipyard, which builds ultra-luxury sailing yachts. I have heard the figure of about R2bn mentioned as the contribution to the Western Cape economy.
