With the launch of their mobile app, can metered taxis beat Uber at its own game?

Metered taxi drivers — the very people who carried knobkerries and hurled insults at Uber drivers at a protest last week — think they finally have the solution to the competition presented by the online taxi booking service. The Gauteng Meter Association has introduced Yookoo, a rival app that people can use to hail metered cabs. “The advent of Uber is just [a matter of] technology. We must also adapt,” says association chairman Reuben Mzayiya. Yookoo app developers Temesgen Tesfaye and Kenny Niemach studied the Uber app and designed a strategy that improves on it.
